Emergency Update: Navigating Hyponatremia & Seizures as a Breastfeeding Mom

Raising Awareness to Empower Our Breastfeeding Community

In this heartfelt update, I share a deeply personal experience from the resuscitation bay at Gold Coast University Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, where I was rushed by ambulance after suffering two seizures in quick succession. Filmed at 11 PM on a Saturday night, I’m groggy from anti-seizure medication, lying on a stretcher with nasal cannula oxygen prongs, a blood pressure cuff, a urinary catheter, a pulse oximeter on my finger, and ECG electrodes monitoring my heart due to elevated troponin levels. Despite the fear of a potential ICU stay due to the risk of another seizure, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible first responders—ambulance paramedics and hospital staff—and the comforting presence of my family: my husband Luke, daughter Amity, and toddler son Spencer. My sodium levels dropped to 121, indicating severe hyponatremia, a condition that can affect breastfeeding mothers due to excessive fluid intake or hormonal changes diluting sodium levels, potentially leading to serious complications like seizures. Breastfeeding moms are at risk because increased water consumption to support milk production, combined with sodium loss, can disrupt electrolyte balance if not carefully managed. As a passionate advocate for breastfeeding, I believe wholeheartedly in its profound benefits and see this experience as a powerful opportunity to raise awareness for our community. I’m more committed than ever to continuing our breastfeeding journey, now armed with greater knowledge to manage this issue and help other moms do the same. Join me in spreading awareness to empower breastfeeding mothers to navigate their journeys safely and confidently.
